Generalized Additive Models (Monographs on Statistics and Applied Probability)

Nonparametric and Semiparametric Models
The concept of nonparametric smoothing is a central idea in statistics that aims to simultaneously estimate and modes the underlying structure. The book considers high dimensional objects, as density functions and regression. The semiparametric modeling technique compromises the two aims, flexibility and simplicity of statistical procedures, by introducing partial parametric components. These components allow to match structural conditions like e.g. linearity in some variables and may be used to model the influence of discrete variables. The aim of this monograph is to present the statistical and mathematical principles of smoothing with a focus on applicable techniques. The necessary mathematical treatment is easily understandable and a wide variety of interactive smoothing examples are given. The book does naturally split into two parts: Nonparametric models (histogram, kernel density estimation, nonparametric regression) and semiparametric models (generalized regression, single index models, generalized partial linear models, additive and generalized additive models). The first part is intended for undergraduate students majoring in mathematics, statistics, econometrics or biometrics whereas the second part is intended to be used by master and PhD students or researchers. The material is easy to accomplish since the e-book character of the text gives a maximum of flexibility in learning (and teaching) intensity..

FussBusters at Home: Strategies and Games for Smoothing the Rough Spots in Your Preschooler's Day
This one-of-a-kind parent's survival guide makes daily life with young children more rewarding and less daunting HERE IS A UNIQUE PARENTING BOOK filled with coping strategies, activities, and ideas for successfully managing day-to-day life with preschoolers. Arranged chronologically over the course of a day, chapters address such topics as waking up, dressing, and managing the morning rush; successful napping without struggles; managing sibling rivalry; making the most out of outdoor play; and, finally, winding down, bath time, and bedtime. Special attention is given to helping preschoolers cope with transitions, meal times, and changes in routines. Each chapter begins with an introduction that highlights common problems, discusses relevant developmental issues, and offers general suggestions to avoid troublesome moments. Detailed, individual activities with easy-to-follow instructions, rhymes, and games follow. Sidebars include important, relevant information on safety issues, real-life anecdotes, and references to enriching resources, such as book and music suggestions. Using the ideas in the book, parents can transform boring or aggravating at-home tasks into experiences that a child-and adult-may find pleasurable and stimulating. With an advanced degree in clinical child psychology and years of professional experiences in child and youth services, author Carol Baicker-McKee recognizes the special needs and abilities of toddlers. As a three-time veteran of the delivery room, she brings personal experience, humor, and hard-won insight into the special joys and struggles of day-to-day life with young children..

Smoothing and Regression: Approaches, Computation, and Application
A comprehensive introduction to a wide variety of univariate and multivariate smoothing techniques for regression Smoothing and Regression: Approaches, Computation, and Application bridges the many gaps that exist among competing univariate and multivariate smoothing techniques. It introduces, describes, and in some cases compares a large number of the latest and most advanced techniques for regression modeling. Unlike many other volumes on this topic, which are highly technical and specialized, this book discusses all methods in light of both computational efficiency and their applicability for real data analysis. Using examples of applications from the biosciences, environmental sciences, engineering, and economics, as well as medical research and marketing, this volume addresses the theory, computation, and application of each approach. A number of the techniques discussed, such as smoothing under shape restrictions or of dependent data, are presented for the first time in book form. Special features of this book include: * Comprehensive coverage of smoothing and regression with software hints and applications from a wide variety of disciplines * A unified, easy-to-follow format * Contributions from more than 25 leading researchers from around the world * More than 150 illustrations also covering new graphical techniques important for exploratory data analysis and visualization of high-dimensional problems * Extensive end-of-chapter references For professionals and aspiring professionals in statistics, applied mathematics, computer science, and econometrics, as well as for researchers in the applied and social sciences, Smoothing and Regression is a unique and important new resource destined to become one the most frequently consulted references in the field..
